Class 201 Unit 1003
Hastings- Charing Cross train leaves Somerhill Tunnel. It was because of these tunnels the Hastings units existed in the first place.
As the line was built on the cheap the tunnels were built as narrow as possible, therefore trains built to the conventional profile were just a bit too big.
This view sees 1003 leaving the newley singled tunnel on April 19th 1986. The track was singled through the tunnels to enable conventional stock to traverse the line
Just over a week later this unit was withdrawn
