At Carlilse the train reversed and the twin power cars of 1001 were leading. A different headboard was fitted to this end.

The Long Thin Drag



In 1986, the Hastings Units were being withdrawn and there were many railtours run which took the units well off the beaten track and far away from the Southern Region.

The trip ran on April 12th 1986 was no exception; it was The Long Thin Drag.

It was jointly run by Hertfordshire railtours and the Southern Electric Group over the Settle Carlisle Line which was then threatened with closure.

The Settle Carlisle Line or the Long Drag as its affectionately known is one of the most heavily graded lines in the country which is how it gained its nickname.

The Units used for the trip were 1032 & 1011 but due to the gradiants, it was felt that a bit more power may be reguired so the two power cars from 1001 were tagged on to the back.
